What’s on in New York in June 2026: Must-See Art Exhibitions

New York City in June 2026: The Ultimate Summer Art Guide

June is arguably the best month to be an art lover in New York City. The city is buzzing with energy, the weather is perfect for gallery-hopping, and the world’s most iconic cultural institutions are rolling out their blockbuster summer programming.

From monumental sculptures in Chelsea to historic face-offs at the Met and pop culture explosions on the Upper East Side, the city's visual culture is on fire this month. If you are planning an art-fueled itinerary, these are the absolute must-see exhibitions in New York City this June.

1. The Major Museum Blockbusters

Giacometti in the Temple of Dendur

  • Where: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)

  • When: Opening June 12, 2026

  • The Vibe: Ethereal, ancient meets modern, hauntingly beautiful.

In one of the most visually stunning curatorial pairings of the year, Alberto Giacometti’s iconic, elongated bronze figures are taking over the soaring glass pavilion of the Temple of Dendur. Watching these spindly, textured modernist sculptures stand in dialogue with 2,000-year-old Egyptian architecture is a once-in-a-decade visual experience. The play of afternoon light across the water and the bronzes is worth the admission price alone.

Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now

  • Where: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

  • When: Opening June 5, 2026

  • The Vibe: Vibrant, nostalgic, sharp-witted.

The Guggenheim is diving deep into its own legendary archives to trace the evolution of Pop Art. This exhibition pairs postwar icons like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein with boundary-pushing contemporary artists who use mass media, consumer spectacle, and advertising to critique modern culture. Seeing Pop Art's bold, graphic energy spiraling up Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous rotunda is a sensory explosion.

Raphael: Sublime Poetry

  • Where: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)

  • When: On view through June 28, 2026

  • The Vibe: High Renaissance masterclass, breathtakingly rare.

If you haven’t caught this spring heavyweight yet, June is your final chance before it closes. The Met has gathered a rare, breathtaking selection of Raphael’s works, focusing on the poetic, delicate precision of his draftsmanship and painting. It’s a quiet, sublime contrast to the louder contemporary shows happening downtown.

2. The Chelsea & Downtown Gallery Scene

If you want to see where the contemporary art world is moving right now, skip the midtown crowds and head straight to the West Side galleries.

Firelei Báez: “Feet squelching on wet grass, nourished by uncertainty.”

  • Where: Hauser & Wirth (Chelsea)

  • When: On view through July 31, 2026

  • The Vibe: Immersive, historical reimagining, lush and monumental.

Dominican-born artist Firelei Báez completely commands the space at Hauser & Wirth. At the center of the show is View of Nature, a colossal eight-panel painting that reimagines a 19th-century cartographer's map, morphing it into a lush, shifting landscape that transitions from tropical warmth to the Arctic Circle. For the first time, Báez is also debuting monumental bronze sculptures of ciguapas—chimerical folklore tricksters—adorned with real feathers. It is dense, beautiful, and wildly original.

Giuseppe Penone: “The Reflection of Bronze”

  • Where: Gagosian (Chelsea)

  • When: On view through July 2, 2026

  • The Vibe: Organic, tactile, philosophical.

Curated by Adam D. Weinberg (former director of the Whitney), this exhibition is an incredible introduction to the Italian master of the Arte Povera movement. Penone’s massive bronze sculptures interact with natural forms, trees, and human imprints, exploring the boundary between humanity and the natural world. It feels less like a gallery and more like a meditative, metallic forest.

3. The Neighborhood Local Favorites

Greater New York 2026

  • Where: MoMA PS1 (Long Island City, Queens)

  • When: All month long

  • The Vibe: Edgy, local, hyper-contemporary.

For a taste of the actual creative energy brewing inside New York City right now, take the E or 7 train to Queens. MoMA PS1’s signature Greater New York survey showcases the rawest talent living and working across the five boroughs. June also marks their outdoor summer programming kick-off, featuring live performances, wampum belt weaving workshops, and avant-garde sound installations.

💡 Quick Tips for Art Hunting in June:

  • The Museum Mile Festival: If you are in town on Tuesday, June 9, the upper stretch of Fifth Avenue shuts down to traffic for an outdoor block party, and museums like the Met, the Guggenheim, and the Museum of the City of New York open their doors for free from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

  • Beat the Heat: Hit the major museums on Friday or Saturday evenings. The Met runs "Date Nights" with live music and drinks, and the crowds are significantly thinner than on a sweltering Tuesday morning.
