Le Viaduc de L’Estaque marks a pivotal moment in Georges Braque’s career, painted in 1908 during his transition from Fauvism to early Cubism. Inspired by the Mediterranean landscape at L’Estaque (also painted by Cézanne), Braque reduces natural forms into simplified, geometric volumes, abandoning vibrant Fauvist color for a more subdued palette of ochres, greens, and earthy tones.
The viaduct dominates the composition as a structural anchor, while the surrounding houses and hillside break down into angular, interlocking shapes.
This work is considered one of Braque’s first steps toward Cubism, bridging the influence of Cézanne with his own exploration of form and structure.
