Sydney Art Exhibitions This September and Spring: What to See in 2026

Sydney Art Exhibitions This September and Spring: What to See in 2026

If you are visiting Sydney this September, you will arrive at the beginning of the city’s spring art season—not autumn, as September falls in the Southern Hemisphere. The highlight is Sydney Contemporary at Carriageworks, but you can also build a full itinerary around drawing, Indigenous art, contemporary Asian art, photography, and sculpture across the city.

Start with Sydney Contemporary

Sydney Contemporary runs from 3 to 6 September 2026 at Carriageworks in Eveleigh. The 10th edition brings together more than 100 galleries from nine countries, with contemporary art, installations, talks, and works available at a variety of price points.sydneycontemporary

If you want to experience Sydney’s commercial contemporary-art scene in one concentrated visit, this is the event to prioritise. Book the Thursday evening Art Night if you enjoy an opening atmosphere, or choose Friday morning for a more focused visit. The fair runs 11 a.m.–9 p.m. on Thursday, 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m.–5 p.m. on Sunday.whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov

My advice: make one quick first lap of the fair without stopping too long. Then return to the galleries and artists that held your attention. Notice how galleries frame works, use lighting, and create a coherent booth identity; it is as valuable as the individual art on view.

Among the exhibitors, LON Gallery is presenting new works by ceramic artist Stephen Benwell, painter Adrienne Gaha, and sculptor Kate Ellis at Booth D6.longallery

After the fair, spend a day at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Its two-building campus makes it one of the strongest museum stops of Sydney’s spring season.

Near at Hand: Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial

Opening 12 September 2026, Near at Hand brings together contemporary Australian drawing. It is free to visit and a good choice if you enjoy intimate, process-led work where line, paper, gesture, and observation matter as much as subject matter.artgallery.nsw.gov

This is a worthwhile exhibition if you are interested in printmaking, illustration, or the graphic discipline behind a successful image. Drawings often reveal the artist’s decisions more openly than finished paintings.

Avatar: Forms of Vishnu

On view until 5 October 2026, Avatar: Forms of Vishnu explores Hindu visual traditions and is presented in the Naala Badu building. The gallery also offers language tours on selected September dates, including 2, 9, and 16 September.artgallery.nsw.gov+1

Give yourself time to look at the material details: colour, ornament, narrative structure, and symbolic motifs. Even if you are not familiar with Hindu iconography, the exhibition offers a powerful lesson in how stories and beliefs are translated into visual form.

Ron Mueck and Käthe Kollwitz

Also on view until 1 October 2026, Silent and Noisy Tragedies brings Ron Mueck’s sculptures into dialogue with works by Käthe Kollwitz from the Art Gallery of NSW collection. Admission is free.artgallery.nsw.gov

This pairing is particularly compelling because both artists use the human figure to communicate emotion, vulnerability, grief, and social experience—though their materials, eras, and visual languages are very different.

Find contemporary work beyond the museums

Sydney’s art scene becomes more interesting when you move beyond the biggest institutions.

In Chippendale, White Rabbit Gallery presents Black Myth, part of the city’s visual-arts programme this season. The gallery is a strong choice for anyone interested in contemporary Chinese art and the dialogues between mythology, popular culture, urban life, technology, and political imagination.whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov+1

Pair this visit with Carriageworks or nearby galleries in Chippendale, Redfern, and Surry Hills for a fuller contemporary-art day.

4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art

Also look for Archetypes: 30 Years of 4A, presented through 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. The anniversary programme is a timely opportunity to explore artistic exchange between Australia, Asia, and diasporic communities.whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov

At UTS Gallery, Alana Hunt presents To the Owner, her first institutional solo exhibition in Gadigal Nura/Sydney. The opening takes place on 10 September, with the exhibition providing a more reflective, research-led contrast to the scale and commercial energy of Sydney Contemporary.whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov+1

Make time for Sydney’s galleries

Sydney Contemporary week is also a good moment to visit commercial galleries in Woollahra, Paddington, Surry Hills, and Chippendale.

At Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Paddington, Yalmakany Marawili’s Walŋakunhami – Bringing to Life runs from 21 August to 12 September 2026. The gallery has played an important role in supporting influential Australian contemporary artists, including Tracey Moffatt, Fiona Hall, Patricia Piccinini, Bill Henson, Dale Frank, and David Noonan.roslynoxley9.com

At Olsen Gallery, Stephen Ormandy opens a new exhibition from 23 September to 17 October 2026, followed by further exhibitions through October and November.olsengallery

These smaller exhibitions are free and often give you a closer encounter with individual artistic practices than a large museum or art fair can offer.

Plan for October and November

If you will be in Sydney later in spring, add these events to your calendar:

  • Artisans in the Gardens, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, 24 October–1 November: a free exhibition of Australian ceramics, textiles, woodwork, jewellery, metalwork, and mixed media. It is especially worthwhile if you are interested in craft and material-led practices.botanicgardens

  • Glebe Art Show, October: a community-focused annual art event and a great opportunity to see local artists outside the institutional circuit.whatson.cityofsydney.nsw+1

  • 2026 Sydney Rare Book Fair, State Library of NSW, 22–24 October: free entry, with rare books, maps, prints, and ephemera. A niche but excellent choice for lovers of print culture and paper-based art.whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov

  • Paula do Prado, Art Gallery of NSW, opening 28 November: a major free exhibition to place on your late-spring list.artgallery.nsw.gov

A three-day art itinerary

Day one: Carriageworks and Chippendale

Begin at Sydney Contemporary. Afterward, visit White Rabbit Gallery and explore Chippendale’s smaller galleries, cafés, and creative spaces.

Spend the morning at the Art Gallery of NSW for Near at Hand, Avatar: Forms of Vishnu, and Silent and Noisy Tragedies. In the afternoon, travel to Paddington for Roslyn Oxley9 and nearby commercial galleries.

Day three: Contemporary Asian art and Sydney’s centre

Visit 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and UTS Gallery. Finish near Circular Quay, the Opera House, or the Royal Botanic Garden—especially if you are visiting during Artisans in the Gardens.

Final advice

Sydney is at its best when you combine one large event with smaller, slower encounters. Start with the scale and energy of Sydney Contemporary, but do not miss the quieter exhibitions where you can spend time with drawing, sculpture, Indigenous art, craft, or contemporary Asian practice.

If your trip is only one weekend, prioritise Sydney Contemporary, Art Gallery of NSW, and White Rabbit Gallery. Together, they offer a strong introduction to Sydney’s contemporary-art scene this September.
